Background: This former industrial site was identified with widespread lubricating oil and chlorinated solvents contamination widespread in the soils and groundwater. A number of large and small oil tanks were also present on site along with substantial pre and post war below ground structures and foundations.
The client required a site fit for housing development with a staged release of land so that development could start as early as possible and before remediation works were completed elsewhere on the site.
Treatment: RAW initially carried out treatability trials on the contaminated material and a pilot test of oil recovery from wells. Based on the results of this testing RAW offered the client a fixed price contract to provide cost certainty.
Subsequently a scheme was derived using a network of oil recovery wells and excavating through made ground to identify contaminated soils requiring treatment.
Contaminated soils were removed for on-site treatment using chemical oxidation or stabilisation. Working from an agreed programme RAW released the site back to the client.
RAW managed the site remediation with a flexible pragmatic approach so that the project was completed with minimal surprises for the client
